joy traveling to many places, including the Rockies, Florida, the Smoky Mountains, and Mexico where they have led two student trips from Sharon’s high school.

Sadie Stratton 88th Birthday

Sadie Alberta Brown Stratton was born 28 Jan 1907 in Decorah. She was the 13th of the fourteen children of William Henry and Elizabeth (Dovenberg) Brown. Sadie’s father died when she was 10 and her mother moved the family to California. Sadie graduated from Alhambra High School in Alhambra, CA in 1925.

On 16 Feb 1927 Sadie married Charles Bartol Stratton in Alhambra, CA. They made their home in San Gabriel, CA where Charles worked in the building trade. Sadie and Charles later divorced.

A son, Leslie B. Stratton, was born to Sadie and Charles’ union. Leslie married Nancy Rattleman. They had 3 children: Christine, Charles and Daniel. Leslie died 13 Jan 1990.

Like many women, during World War II, Sadie went to work as a machine operator because so many men had left the work force and entered the military. She continued working as a machine operator for 30 years retiring in 1971. In addition to her job as a machine operator, Sadie owned and operated a 5 acre lemon grove. She and her son, Leslie, worked in the lemon grove in the evening and on weekends.

Sadie moved back to her home community of Decorah in 1975. She now makes her home at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Street, Aaron, Jr. — Oscar

The Street family has a long association with Winneshiek Co. Aaron Street, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth (Clark) Street, came to Salem, in southern Iowa in 1837, probably from Ohio, and moved into the Springwater area of Winneshiek Co. about 1855. Aaron built and operated a grist mill there and helped establish the Friends Meeting at Springwater. A few years later, the family moved to Hesper, where Aaron was very active in Friends’ work. In 1867, they moved to Jasper Co., MO and later to Coffeeville, KS where Aaron died in 1871 and was buried. Elizabeth and the family moved back to Hesper. She died in 1898 and is buried in the Hesper Public Cemetery, originally the Friends Cemetery.

Of Aaron’s children, Mary, who married Bennett Haines in 1861, and Bailey, who married Mary Jane Purcell in 1868, retained ties with Winneshiek Co. Mary and Bennett Haines lived near Hesper until about 1900 when they moved to North Dakota and founded the village of Hesper there. Bailey and Mary Jane (Purcell) Street lived in Missouri, North Dakota, and Iowa at various times, but spent most of their lives at Hesper, IA. Bailey was a nurseryman and fruit grower.

Bailey and Mary (Street) Haines had six children: Rosella, Oscar Leroy, John Purcell, Albert, Alfred Bailey, and George. Albert and George died in infancy. Of the remaining four, Oscar Leroy remained in Winneshiek Co, living at Hesper all his life except for two years in North Dakota at the turn of the century.

Oscar Leroy Street was born 16 Oct 1871 and married Minnie Melissa White, also of Hesper, on 30 Mar 1897. She was born 3 Feb 1878, the daughter of Monroe and Rebecca (Fawcett) White. Oscar died 14 Jan 1924, and Minnie later married Waldemar O. Bielski on 21 Jul 1926. Minnie died 12 Jul 1971 and Waldemar on 30 Jun 1956. Minnie, Waldemar and Oscar are buried in the Hesper Public Cemetery.

Oscar and Minnie (White) Street had six children: Guilford Bartlett, Granville Osborne, Merrill Emery, Grace Alberta, Leroy Oscar, and Byron John who died before his second birthday.
